It was built in 1568 with the support of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. The original name of the Church is the holy name of Jesus, that name appears to be a monogram in marble and bronze by Bartolomeo Ammannati, built on order of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese by Vignola in between 1568 and 1584.

The construction of this structure is an important innovation in the history of art in fact was built according to the decrees of the Council of Trent. The Church was built with a single nave structure to concentrate the attention of the faithful on the altar. After the death of Vignola, the shipyard was in the hands of Giacomo Della Porta until 1580. A particularly valuable is the altar with columns coated with lapis Lazuli and silver and gilded carvings. Originally the statue of St. Ignatius was cast in silver by Legros and a second time for requisitions of the Treaty of Tolentino, it was later redone in silver at the hands of stucco Tadolini.

At the chapel of the sacred heart is possible to admire the presbytery where is memory of Saint Robert Bellarmine, the tomb was destroyed in 1854. In the left part of the presbytery there is the Madonna della Strada, considered miraculous.
